A little twisted work of art, the canvas is black! Why this dissatisfaction
with traditional canvas or even colours for that matter? Central Indian
artist Shailendra, has no answers, because he doesn't like them. “Answers
put a full stop to conversations. The dialogue stops as soon as the questions
come to an End. Then its all over.” he says. He is caught up with
art, and does not want to constrain himself to a sole medium. From stone,
as a sculptor, he sometimes wanders into soft canvas. On the 6th November
2009 as the season begins, Shailendra Kumar with his white inked canvases
arrives in Pune to the Waves Art Gallery. The works may reflect philosophical
ideas of non-existence found in classical Indian philosophies. But if
one leaves the profound aside, we could simply say 'every end is a beginning
and every beginning marks an end. Perhaps that is what the artists and
common man's struggle is all about: constantly moving forward towards
an end, which never comes. The end never comes. Because this will lead
to something else and the chain never stops, its never-ending. Its endless
beginnings.
